Hearing protection is an essential piece of gear for any construction job.

Listening to music is one of the most popular pleasures we humans get to enjoy. Nothing beats listening to your favorite tunes in the comfort of your own home.

However, as with everything, too much of a good thing can lead to some problems. In this case, prolonged exposure to sound can damage our hearing over time. The good news, for us music enthusiasts, is that there are special tools that can help protect our hearing from dangerously loud noise.

This is essential for those who work in environments that are bombarded with extremely loud noise regularly.  Keep in mind that noise higher than 85 dB can damage your hearing.

The special tool I mentioned earlier is, of course, hearing protection headphones. In this list, we will be taking a look at not just any ordinary hearing protection headsets, but Bluetooth hearing protection headphones specifically.

Below you’ll find detailed reviews of each model, but if you’re in a hurry and want a quick recommendation, then take a look at the 3M Worktunes; based on their quality and price, these landed at the top of our list. Based on its reasonable price and 24-decibel NRR rating, it’s our top all-around pick for everyday use.

While we found several other good options- including some high-end communication headsets for professionals (construction workers, landscapers, etc).

If you read until the end of the article, you’ll also see one model we think you should NOT spend your hard-earned money on.

A decent choice that delivers all you need to protect your hearing while being quite affordable at the same time, the 3M Worktunes is as good a pick as any in this category.

The 3M Worktunes comes with all the essential features you will need to both protect your ears and enjoy some music at the same time.

Bluetooth pairing is pretty solid, and it also comes with a cord that you can connect to other devices if you wish to. It has comfortable and quality ear pads and an adjustable headband that uses the vented design.

The ear cups are also large enough to completely cover the entirety of your ears to provide optimum noise cancellation.

It also has an AM/FM mode if you wish to listen to the radio. You can scan through the different stations with an easy to use control knob that is located on the side. However, in you are using the AM/FM mode, you won’t be able to receive any incoming calls.

Batteries: The 3M Worktunes does not come with rechargeable batteries, which can be a downside. The good news is that it requires only 2 AA batteries, which barely affects the overall weight, and users comment that battery use is minimal.

Another option is to purchase the 3M ALPHA1100 Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery Pack for 3M WorkTunes Wireless, but this is sold separately and will set you back about an extra $30, so you’d have to factor that in vs. buying AAs.

One to AVOID: Protear Bluetooth Hearing Protection Earmuffs for Mowing & Woodworking

Protear Bluetooth Hearing Protection Earmuffs. (Image: Amazon)

The Protear earmuffs are meant to offer a comfortable experience to all users of their hearing protector headset. The cushioning on the earmuffs are pretty good and prevents your ears from feeling squeezed after prolonged use. The headbands are also padded to offer additional comfort.

This model has a 25 dB rating, so you would expect it to cancel loud noises for noisy, industrial workspaces. The earpads are meant to help improve noise cancellation as it fits and covers the entirety of your ears perfectly well.

However, a large percentage of users complain the noise cancellation is not up to par and that these don’t do a good enough job blocking outside noise.

On the plus side, the Bluetooth feature does a decent job of pairing up with other Bluetooth devices. It also comes with an additional cord if you wish to connect it to previous-gen devices. The Protear also features an AM/FM mode and is powered using 3 AAA batteries. On average, the 3 AAA batteries can last up to 8 hours.

The Protear is mostly known for delivering headsets with optimum comfort at a reasonable price – but we think it comes up short on sound and build quality.

We, therefore, recommend you scroll back up and chose any of the other options since there are better ones on this list that even cost less.

Key Features:

  • Double layer soft foam padding on both the headband and ear cups.
  • 25 dB NRR.

  • Sound Quality: 6/10
  • Bass: 5/10

  • Fit/Comfort: 7/10
  • Battery Life: 8
  • Connectivity (Bluetooth stability): 7.5/10

  • Relatively Comfortable

  • Relatively short battery life.
  • Navigating through the radio stations or skipping tracks can be a bit rough due to the flimsy controls.
  • The overall construction feels cheap.
  • Short lifespan

Buyers Guide:

What are Hearing Protection Headphones?

Here’s a little introduction to this helpful safety equipment to those who are unfamiliar with it. It is a headphone that offers exceptional noise canceling capabilities.

This is why it is popular with individuals who work in construction. Have you ever seen construction workers wearing a large and bulky headphone? Yes, that is a hearing protection headphone.

On the flip side, the Bluetooth protection headphone can connect to your smartphone, which allows you to listen to your favorite playlist and answer incoming calls without needing to whip out your phone.

A convenient feature for those who usually have their hands full, literally, at work.  You can also find models that include extra cords that allow you to plug in other devices into the headphone.

Important Features to Look for in a Hearing Protection Headphone

Now, before you head out to your local gadgets store to buy one of these safety headphones, you need to make sure you consider some important factors before committing to a purchase.

  • Optimized Noise Reduction Rating (NRR)

The most important to consider when buying a hearing protection headphone is its NRR or Noise Reduction Rating. This tells you how effective it is when it comes to canceling loud ambient noise from your surroundings. This is the main reason you are buying this type of headset, so make sure it delivers in this category first and foremost.

The NRR rating of the headphone is not the number of how much decibels it can withstand but how much it can reduce. So, for example, you work in an environment that gets up 90dB of noise during working hours, if your headphone has an NRR of 25 dB, it means it can reduce the environmental noise down to 65 dB. As you might recall, the human ear can withstand up to 85 dB, which makes this a well below the dangerous noise level.

Now that you know how to check proper the NRR of headphones, let us go through other features you should consider.

  • Weight and Comfort

For obvious reasons, you will need a Bluetooth hearing protection headphone that fits well and feels comfortable to wear. As you will be using this during working hours, make sure that it feels comfortable to wear for a prolonged period. The last thing you want is neck pain at the end of the day because of an uncomfortable hearing protection headset. You are just basically dodging one bullet only to fall in the direction of another.

This can be a difficult aspect to decide on as hearing protection headphones tend to be quite bulky and, therefore, heavy. The best approach here is to pick one that feels good to wear and make sure to take a break every once in a while during work especially if you start to feel some tension around your neck.

  • Battery Life and Charging Time

Another essential feature you need to take a look at is the hearing protection headphone’s battery life. You need one that can last the whole day at work. You should also opt for ones that have a considerably shorter charging time. However, there are hearing protection headsets out there that utilize batteries, which can add to the overall weight.

  • Additional Features

One of the most basic features in a Bluetooth hearing protection headphone is its ability to connect to your smartphone. This makes some tasks considerably more convenient. You can also look for additional features such as AM/FM radio mode, which is a good alternative for those who prefer listening to news or radio talk shows.

As you can see, dozens of hearing protection headphones out there can help prevent hearing loss while also acting as a media device to help pass the time. If your work requires you to stay within range of exceedingly loud noises, having a hearing protector headphone will help you prevent receiving any long-term damage that can lead to hearing loss. Hopefully, this article has helped you figure out the best product to choose from.

1 thought on “7 Best Bluetooth Hearing Protection Headphones {Plus One To AVOID!}”

  1. Thanks for the reviews… have the Worktunes Connect and agree with your views.
However, apparently none of these offer the ability to use Google Voice control which should be a major decision factor… for example, the ability to make an emergency call without needing to physically access the phone.
As for radio, note that many phones such as the Moto series have an app that receives FM radio directly that can then be accessed by any bluetooth headset.
